Emergency Response Driving
This course teaches participants the correct principles and techniques to be a safe and skilled emergency response driver.
Emergency response drivers must be able to operate under a number of variables including: the urgency of the call, higher than normal speeds, weather conditions, condition of the apparatus, driver fitness, and most certainly, the interaction with other drivers, pedestrians, and victims – all of whom react differently under increased stress. This course provides techniques to improve driving skill, and teaches how to use good judgment and heighten awareness while driving an emergency response vehicle. This training will help you adapt to the ever-changing situations that emergency drivers must face.
(Approximately 2 hours)
- Legal aspects and Driver Responsibilities – NFPA
- Department SOP
- Concepts of accident avoidance and defensive driving techniques
(Approximately 4 hours)
- (Conducted on a 2.8 mile driving course with a wet skid pad)
- Acceleration
- Brake and steer techniques
- Evasive maneuvers
- Backing
